Shape Your Abs (2005) Review

I love a good ab workout. You can never have too many. Because you need to do abs so often, variety is key for not getting bored. This is a good workout to add to your collection. Tracey York is a good instructor and she does another great job here. She begins by alternating two minutes of toning with five minutes of cardio (always keeping your heart rate up). There is crunches, pilates, core-conditioning and "dynamic movement" (they're all short but tough). Because your heart rate is up a lot and you are doing toning, that's the best way to burn the fat and tone together which is more effective in the long run. This workout is very well choreographed which makes it fun. Again, you need dumbells here too. The one problem I have with this, which you'll need to think about too, is that you may already have this because it's a re-release of Shape Your Abs from last year. The cover has changed in a ploy to sell more copies. I like this cover best though so I'm going to sell my original copy. Just don't buy this dvd if you already have last years copy.

The DVD is composed of 10 different ab exercises. They are easy to follow. You could really feel the difference after doing the exercises properly. The reason I am not giving it a 5 star is that it does not work the obliques enough.

10 Minute Solution: Blast Off Belly Fat (2007) Review

10 Minute Solution: Blast Off Belly Fat (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a fan of the 10 Minute Solutions series and was intrigued when I saw this one was coming out. I was curious to see whether it would live up to its name and if it would keep my attention and not bore me with endless crunches. I have tried it and can definately say without hesitation, this is another winner. Each of the 5 workouts has effective and creative moves that really work and are fun to do. During each workout, I could feel the muscles working and could see a difference afterward. The last two workouts are more traditional, incorporating crunches, but they do so in a way that is not monotonous. The instructor is pleasant, but not annoying and she gives good modifications, if neccessary, along with direction as to how to do the exercises properly. I really am glad that I have added this to my collection and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to tighten and tone their waistline!

Stephanie Vitorino: The Ultimate Body Shaper Review

Stephanie Vitorino: The Ultimate Body Shaper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Ultimate Body Shaper is recommended for young, already fit women who want to work hard. This is definitely NOT the ideal video for beginners, seniors, seriously overweight people or anyone who doesn't enjoy a high intensity workout. Easier, alternate moves are not provided, so you either have to keep up, stop, or figure it out on your own. I'm a very fit aging babyboomer, and I found both the step and mat workouts to be very challenging. Because of this, half the time my eye was on the timer and my mind was wondering how much more I had to do/endure. Afterwards, however, I absolutely loved how I felt. All that delicious muscle soreness let me know I actually spent my time productively. And I was proud of myself for doing the required work and getting through it.
The best and most exciting feature of The Ultimate Body Shaper is Vitorino's use of methods and moves you won't find elsewhere. Vitorino relies heavily on cardio burst intervals, multi-pattern moves, and balance. Also, don't count on resting on your mat too much since most of the exercises are done from a standing position. The video has a warm-up, a cool-down, a mat/floor workout and a high step workout. For equipment, you'll need two sets of dumbbells (light and heavier) a step and a mat.
Vitorino is pleasant enough to look at and easy enough to follow, but her personality is little on the bland side. Likewise, the background music is utterly forgettable and does not inspire your heart to get into the action. That said, The Ultimate Body Shaper delivers on the promise of a safe, effective intermediate to advanced level workout and is worth the investment.

Stephanie offers two complete 30 minute workouts on one DVD, plus full warm-up and cool-down options. The first workout is the V Body High Step Workout and is an incredible blend of aerobics/toning intervals for maximum benefit. The second segment is V Body Mat Workout, but don't let the name fool you -- you will not be leisurely resting on your mat for gentle pulses or other ballet/pilates type moves. Not here! Instead, Stephanie uses the mat for standing work, actively engaging the core in the ultimate balance challenge (balance with weight work). Cardio blasts are included in each workout for maximum fat-burning results.About the instructor: Stephanie Vitorino is one of LA's most sought-after fitness trainers. She's a nationally certified fitness trainer with AFAA and ACE with over 12 years of coaching experience in exercise physiology. With a positive approach to fitness she inspires her students to take control of their lives through a focused commitment toward better health. The Complete Physique 57 Workout Kit 3 Disc Set With Ball and Pump (2009) Review

The Complete Physique 57 Workout Kit 3 Disc Set With Ball and Pump (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been reviewing a lot of dvds lately because I've completely switched up my fitness routine these days. I've gone from lots of high intensity cardio and heavy weight training to full body workouts, yoga, and blended barre/yoga/pilates and dance programs.
I would consider myself to be in good shape, but I need a change and this new direction has presented many challenges that I welcome. In recent years I've done extreme fitness programs like P90X and Insanity. In the past I've tried different pilates and yoga workouts, but quickly lost interest when they didn't yield the results I was after. So I was a bit leery to revisit this type of programming.
However, I've tried several different series in the past few weeks and have had to eat my words. My latest is Physique 57. After hearing so much about it I had to give it a try. I did the 57 minute workout and was humbled when after a few minutes of leg lifts I could barely continue. I used muscles that hardly ever get a workout.
The workout is broken down into different sections: Arms, legs & seat and ab work. The arm work used light and "heavy" weights with variations of basic arm curls (bicep, hammer) and push ups. The participants used what looked like 3 and 5lb weights. Since I'm used to lifting much heavier the 5lb weights that I used only left me with a slight burn. But that is easily remedied by raising the weight that I use. Depending on your experience the 5lbs might be OK.
The leg work presented more of a challenge. By using the barre and a playground ball for certain exercises, my legs were on fire. Next the hips and seat were put through the ringer with standing leg raises and floor work. There were moments when I couldn't lift my leg anymore! But this is something to work towards mastering.
The ab work had some familiar moves and a few things I've never seen before. I know I will be feeling this tomorrow.
Someone commented about the instructor. She was quite talkative, but when I'm concentrating on the moves that is of little importance if I feel like the exercise is working. The music was modern and motivating without being a distraction. Some of the other programs I've used, though they are challenging, have what sounds like elevator music in the background. Great music is always a plus.
Though this workout was not THE most challenging thing I've ever done, it was difficult enough to make me feel like it was getting the job done. In the past few weeks in replacing my heavy strength training with mat work, I've noticed changes in my legs and hips in just this short period that I had not seen with all of the extreme workouts that I've used.
This program is worth buying if for nothing more than the great leg/hip/bum focus.
*** an update the 57 minutes is over before you know it. That's a plus. I've done hour long workouts when I can't stop watching the clock ***
****another update 12/28/10 ... I've been doing this workout for over a month now and recently moved up to volume 2 when it was released ... I am hooked. Like someone else said I've always lifted heavier weights and didn't think this program would be effective and I was wrong. I'm loving the changes in my body that I never got with other programs. And they present just as much of an challenge as other so called extreme workouts without all the high impact moves. *****

Power Half Hour Thigh Trimmer Tony Horton, Beachbody Review

Power Half Hour Thigh Trimmer Tony Horton, Beachbody
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this particular workout (which I happened to do again this morning) as part of a DVD which contains all the Power Half Hour Workouts.
This one focuses on lots of Squat, Lunge variations, Kickboxing (only the kicking part no punches), and many combinations of lunges w/kicks. There's also some specific Abductor work as well as some unweighted leg extensions and leg curls.
Between specific lower body work Tony has you doing various cardio type movements to keep your heart rate up so you definitely get a medium intensity/low impact type cardio workout at the same time.
Because you aren't using weights the emphasis is on high reps which really helps keep your heart rate up as well
The workout starts with a warm up, then the main body of the workout and then after the 30 minute clock runs out there's a few minutes of cooldown. At most the whole thing is 35 or so minutes.
Here's a complete breakdown:
Warm up: Run in place/swing arms and legs side to side/mini butt kicks/run in place
Four way squat (feet close, medium, wide, really wide)
3 way rear lunge/leg raise in front combo (same leg lunges and then is raised across, front, to the side)
3 way rear lunge/front kick combo
Stab-lunge to the front, then step back and kick to the front (same leg lunges and kicks)
Cardio break (run in place/butt kicks/high knees/wide high knees)
3 direction kicks (low, med, high), first kick across the body, then to the front, then to the side
Front lunge, step back, then rear lunge combo (use same leg to lunge to the front then the back)
Cardio break (run in place, run in a large circle, butt kicks, wide high knees)
Curtsey lunge (all on 1 side, then switch sides)
Curtsey lunge/kick combo (use same leg to lunge diagonally to the rear and then to kick to the front)
Cardio break (butt kicks (moving forwards and backwards/high knees/wide high knees)
Double Curtsey lunge (alternating sides)
Double Curtsey lunge/Kick combo
Skaters (side to side)
Toe Raises (out front in)
Leaning hamstring curls
Standing leg extensions
Standing Side (abductor) raises
(Repeat curls/extension/side raises)
Toe raises (out/front/in)
Cool down (run in place/gentle kick-march)
Stretch: wide legs/reach arms overhead/wide leg side stretch/wide leg forward bend (also stretch to each side in this position then back to center)The Power Half Hour workouts are extremely effective in packing a lot into a short time period. I'd recommend buying the whole set which comes on one dvd. You need very little equipment (resistance bands for upper body work on one of the other programs, and a chair to use for balance).
If one commits to rotating these workouts throughout most days of the week you can definitely get great results.
My wife originally bought it as a preparation for doing P90X (she had already done Slim In 6) and I started using after P90X for some of my maintenance workouts. I was extremely surprised by how intense these little workouts are, they are a LOT tougher than their name implies.
Still, in spite of their intensity, you can modify them to meet your current level of fitness by just going slow, doing less reps, not going as deep into the movements etc.
I'd recommend doing something like "Power 90" by Beachbody first if you are totally out of shape and then use this program to step up the intensity and specificity.
Power 90 works the whole body in circuits, where the Power Half Hour programs focus more specifically on either upper body, thighs, buns, abs (the Ab burner is also a mixture of cardio and ab work which makes sense since if you want to see your abs you've got to lose fat), and stretching.
Tony Horton has a gift for designing programs that are efficient, effective and require minimal equiptment and floor space. I've done these on vacation in relatively small areas and brought resistance bands with me for the upper body workout. Also, Tony is a character so be prepared to laugh and have fun while you're working hard! :)
Highly recommended for folks who are willing to put in the work. These are NOT magic bullets, these are real exercise routines where you have to make a real effort. BUT this is the only way to get real results!
